Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a very popular and effective form of exercise that provides a wealth of physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Pilates is practised worldwide by people from all walks of life, including dancers, elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts and those with symptoms of pain, especially back pain.
Typically, Pilates is performed on a mat, usually using only body weight as the 'load' or 'resistance'. However, at times, small and portable equipment like stability balls, foam rollers, resistance bands and more are used alongside the mat exercises to create additional resistance/increase the intensity of the exercise.
How can Pilates help me?
Pilates can often be an effective way for people with musculoskeletal disorders, especially low back pain, to correct the source of their dysfunction and remove the triggers causing pain. So much so that many doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors frequently refer patients to Pilates teachers for rehabilitation and/or therapeutic exercise.
Pilates seeks to develop and strengthen the whole body, which is why Pilates is often referred to as a 'holistic' form of exercise. This balanced approach to lengthening and strengthening muscles restores the length-tension relationship in key groups of muscles, so that their optimal function can be restored and quality of life improved.
The benefits of Pilates exercises are plentiful, including;
Improved Posture
Reduced low back pain
Reduced shoulder and neck pain
Improved balance
Stronger pelvic floor
Improved flexibility
Greater core strength and stability
Greater joint mobility and stability
Stronger immune system
Reduced risk of injury
Increased muscular strength, endurance and tone
Reduced stress levels
Meet your Instructor
"I initially discovered Pilates around the age of 17. I was desperately searching for a way to reconnect to my mind and body as I had recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, which honestly felt like my life was over at the time. Aches, pain and anxiety completely controlled my life for many years. I would get such debilitating pain in my lower back and shoulders that even going on short walks would be exhausting. I would spend the next few days completely consumed with pain that I couldn’t get out of bed, go to work or do anything for myself. All I could think was ‘what kind of life is this for a 17-year-old?’. This is when I realised it was time I took matters into my own hands, and I made the decision that I no longer wanted to suffer with my mental and physical health, I wanted to live and enjoy my life!
Pilates gave me exactly what I was looking for, home in my body again. Home in my mind again. The techniques and principles taught in Pilates helped me to build strength in my body that I never had before, and the more regularly I practised, the less pain and anxiety I felt. I felt renewed in my mind, body and spirit!
Now 10 years later, I have qualified as a Level 3 Mat Pilates Instructor so that I can help others find home in their mind and body again. I find so much joy and satisfaction in helping and seeing people rebuild trust with their body, achieve goals they never thought they could, and live their life pain-free."
